Online MSc Information Systems Management

This course gives you an opportunity to develop a detailed understanding of the role of information systems and technology (IS/T) in businesses around the world, along with a critical awareness of current and emerging issues in this continually developing sector.

You will learn from our expert team and external guest speakers, renowned for their specialist knowledge. You will also enjoy the programme’s emphasis on debate, critique and interaction with other students and staff.

Admission Requirements

Normally a minimum 2:2 honours degree or equivalent.

A wide range of professional qualifications are also accepted either in partial or complete fulfilment of entry requirements.

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.

Programme Outline

The scheme has been designed to meet the aims of the online MSc in a flexible manner and can be tailored to the individual preferences of each student. The MSc requires you to complete four courses plus a final dissertation. The programme consists of the following modules:

Introductory

Induction

This is the first module of the programme which gives an orientation to the course and the online learning style. It does not carry credits and students are encouraged to go through the material in this module at their own pace and get accustomed to the online medium.

Stage 1

120 credits, four taught modules

Residential

Mandatory one-week residency held in Salford, United Kingdom, or Zürich, Swizterland.

Stage 2

60 credits, Individual dissertation

Dissertation Work

A conventional dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words, consisting of research question, aims and objectives, rationale for undertaking the study, literature review, research methodology, analysis of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Module Descriptions

Induction

Not-for-credit module

A not-for-credit induction module will be the starting point of the programme. The induction process is designed to familiarise you with the programme design, requirements and resources, as well as with the way online interaction, learning and grading will take place. After the induction you should be familiar with academic life, including academic writing, library services and library access, OnlineCampus access, and academic support services.

Strategic International Business Management

You will gain a thorough grounding in the major issues and perspectives of management, with a particular focus on strategic, global and organisational issues in an international context. You will also get an overview of key issues and decisions relating to the social responsibilities of corporate management. You will be encouraged to think critically about theory and practice in an ethical and professional manner.

Digital Innovation

The Digital Innovation module has been designed specifically to equip you with the practical and theoretical skills needed for contemporary business settings; you will gain an understanding of the role of strategic business models that can exploit innovative and disruptive technologies such as Google Glass, 3D printing, and wearable technologies. The module will encourage you to critically assess how social, disruptive and innovative technologies can become key business enablers and facilitate strategic competitive advantages; this critical awareness will be underpinned by cutting-edge academic and practitioner research.

Information Systems

You will develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the needs of organisations when strategically planning, re-engineering, and integrating business information systems. You will also achieve a holistic knowledge of the critical role of IS/T, both at corporate and business levels, enabling you to be ready to support and deliver professional, ethical and legal services in IS/T implementation.

Project Management, Leadership and Skills: Planning and Control

You will learn about the approaches, skills and methods of effective project management, and the tools and techniques required for planning, control, teamwork, leadership and other key processes. All of these qualities will develop your ability to lead complex projects.

  • Duration

    Minimum 12 months, maximum 3 years.

  • Delivery Method

    Mostly online via OnlineCampus (an interactive online learning environment) with intensive class discussion and collaboration, plus a one-week compulsory residency.

  • Places

    The number of places per term is strictly limited to 90.

  • Terms

    Four terms per year (winter, spring, summer and autumn).

  • Tuition Fees

    13,000 CHF (Swiss Francs). This includes library access, OnlineCampus access, graduation fees, and University of Salford matriculation fees. Fees are payable in interest free instalments over 12 months, however, the programme is not eligible for UK Postgraduate Loans for Master’s Study. The fees are for the entire programme, and include all the courses as well as supervision for the final innovation project.

    Residency costs, such as airfare and accommodation, plus a 2,000 CHF (Swiss Francs) tuition fee for the residency, and some of the textbooks that you will need for the course are not included in these fees.
